ArtScience Museum has reopened, and those visiting can be assured that your safety and well-being is being looked after, thanks to additional precautionary measures put in place. The beloved Singapore institution has always been known for the wonderful worlds it unveils, and while many great exhibitions have come and gone over the years, one has been a fixture—Future World: Where Art Meets Science.

Over the last few months, the permanent exhibition by teamLab has added five new artworks, joining long-time favourites like Crystal Universe and Sketch Aquarium. With leisure travel still restricted, a visit to Future World is a great way to change up your routine and broaden your horizons while reminding yourself that a brighter future is just around the corner. Just be sure to wash those hands and keep social distancing in mind! Here are the new works you can look forward to experiencing.

1. Proliferating Immense Life – A Whole Year per Year

As its name suggests, this installation is larger than life, meandering through the four seasons with algorithmically generated flowers. As the seasons pass, these flowers will grow and wither, reacting to the touch of visitors to disperse and vanish.

2. 100 Years Sea [running time: 100 years]

Climate change, in particular, the threat of rising sea levels, has risen in prominence in conversations around Singapore in recent months, and 100 Years Sea [running time: 100 years] looks at the issue with concrete facts. By combining the elegance and beauty of traditional Japanese art with contemporary scientific data, it illustrates the rising sea level in real-time, bringing to our attention the inevitable catastrophic change on the oceans.

3. Impermanent Life, at the Confluence of Spacetime New Space and Time is Born

Two of the six elements that make up Transcending Boundaries have been refreshed, the first of which is Impermanent Life, at the Confluence of Spacetime New Space and Time is Born which replaces Four Seasons, a 1000 Years, Terraced Rice Fields – Tashibunosho.

It portrays the cycle of life through cherry blossoms. Circles of light and darkness within the work will react to the environment around it.

4. Enso – Cold Light

The second new element of Transcending Boundaries is Enso – Cold Light which takes the place of Life Survives by the Power of Life. Referencing enso, the Zen circles drawn in single brushstrokes that embody enlightenment, equality and the universe, this new work takes a modern look at Japanese calligraphy in three dimensions.

5. The Way of Birds

While the previous four works will inhabit the City in A Garden segment of Future World, The Way of Birds is the new occupant of Sanctuary. In this mesmerising space, you’ll be surrounded by a flock of birds moving about in murmurations and reacting to the presence of viewers. Each moment you see before you is unique.
