Shin Kushiya
The main draws here are kushiyaki (Japanese grilled skewers) and sushi. Try the renkon chips (lotus root chips with homemade dips), wafu steak (charcoal-grilled tenderloin with wafu dressing) and tofu cheesecake here.
This is Japanese food like how it might appear in a restaurant in Japan. You’ll find none of that cheap conveyor belt sushi here. The main draw here is kushiyaki (skewered BBQ meats, vegetables and seafoods). We tried the tsukune—homemade chicken meatballs but they were a little too salty for our liking and nothing spectacular. The menu is extensive, so if you’re a light eater, we suggest you pass on the kushiyaki and sample the appetizers instead. The onsen tamago—lightly poached egg served chilled in a bonito broth and satsuma imo—charcoal-baked sweet potatoes were the highlights of our meal. The onsen reminds one of the three-minute egg that goes with the local kaya toast—only a lot more refreshing and tart. The dishes here are so authentic, we forgot we were still in Singapore.
