Ah Hoi’s Kitchen

Renowned for its seafood and local cuisine, this veteran hotel poolside restaurant is a favorite among many. The place, complete with a high timber ceiling and swirling metal fans, exudes a relaxed rustic charm. It is open air, but covered for a tropical feel, with blowers blasting cool air to keep you comfortable. Think coffee shop, but without the noise, dirt and grease. We waltzed into this eatery expecting to be pampered with good food, and we were not disappointed.

Ah Hoi’s Combination, which consists of deep fried spring rolls, soft shell crabs and chicken ngoh hiang, was an excellent way to kick start dinner, although health conscious diners might find it too heavy on the grease. The lobster beehoon in claypot is a delight with its rich and thick gravy. We highly recommend the honey glazed ginger chicken. Sweet and tender, the chicken pieces are sumptuous, while ginger slices gave the dish flavor and prevented the sweetness from being overpowering. It’s a must try.

We ordered Ah Hoi’s pancake for dessert. Accompanied with a scoop of strawberry ice cream, this pastry with mango filling is refreshing. The mango filling was cooked just right, and the pastry not too dry. In all, this casual restaurant offers appetizing food, though a few of its dishes may be too rich for some. An ideal place for families, groups of friends and out of town guests who want to experience local dining in a comfortable setting.

When the weather is good, eating outside can be a truly enjoyable dining experience. These joints with charming open air areas are just the place to dine on breezy evenings.
