Ola Beach Club
Siloso Beach gets a Hawaiian-themed beach club with solid food and water sports.
Stylish Hawaiian-themed (and owned) restaurant and beach club Ola has a twin focus on good food and drink as well as exciting water sports. There's a beachside lounge with daybeds and a pool downstairs, and upstairs is a nautical-themed restaurant with a Hawaiian-leaning dishes like the Lomi Lomi Salmon (confit salmon flaked with tomatos, onions, servied in a cute little waffle cup and topped with tobiko, $16) and the tuna poke bowl ($20), The bar is run by Alex Ng, who cut his teeth at Loof, Bar Stories and most recently Tess Bar & Kitchen and who shakes up tropical signature cocktails.
The buzz: There's now a casual alternative to the fancytown beach clubs of Tanjong Beach, and it's on Siloso. Just a short walk from Coastes beach bar at the space formerly occupied by Azurra, stylish Hawaiian-themed (and owned) restaurant and beach club Ola has opened near the end of 2016, with a twin focus on good food and drinks as well as exciting water sports, neither of which are of the generic variety.
The vibe: With a large boathouse, an elegant second-floor dining room, a casual sandy lounge on the first floor and not to mention their own launch jetty (for the rare and exciting water-propelled Jet Pack and Jetblade, along with the more usual kayaks and banana boats), the vibe at Ola is a bit different, depending on where you hang out. The lounge is predictably casual, with day beds, a beachside bar with swings as well as bar stools along the counter and a pool. At the understatedly nautical-themed restaurant upstairs, things feel a lot more elegant: ferns hang from the ceiling, the white tiled bar is backlit with sunlight and the broad terrace has some nice alfresco seating. The place is "family-friendly" so do be warned if that's not your thing.
The food: Whereas surrounding beach bars are doing the usual burgers, pizzas and fish n' chips, Ola is serving a Hawaiian-leaning menu that is different, though not entirely unpredictable. Cold starters include the Lomi Lomi Salmon (confit salmon flaked with tomatos, onions, servied in a cute little waffle cup and topped with tobiko, $16) and the obligatory but well-executed tuna poke bowl ($20), where you can choose from three dressings (we liked the kimchi option) and a few options for toppings. For mains, we like the surprisingly umami-packed Loco Moco ($28), a caper-studded wagyu patty served on koshihikari rice flecked with sesame seeds and kelp, topped with a panko-crusted egg. For dessert, go for the Haupia Sphere ($22), a fun take on your usual melting chocolate ball thing. Here, the Valrhona chocolate ball is filled with a coconut sponge cake, nata de coco and vanilla ice cream.
The drinks: Run by Alex Ng, who cut his teeth at Loof, Bar Stories and most recently Tess Bar & Kitchen, the bar shakes up tropical signature cocktails. The tiki variety are both familiar and surprising, as with the Uliuli (Blue Curacao, vodka, with an in-house vanilla passionfruit puree topped with a thick, torched meringue, $22) and the boozy rum, cream and coconut juice-laced Melemele ($22) whose surprise ingredient is a cinnamon-banana puree.
Why you'll be back: It's more affordable and less of a scene than its Tanjong Beach counterparts, and the sunset view from the second floor terrace is amazing.
