Travel apps you need to have before jetting off

Thanks to the plethora of travel apps available these days, our lives have been drastically improved, bringing convenience and even being more productive. There is an enormous amount of apps in the travel market, but we’ve distilled it down to these four essential ones.

Best for cheap flights

If you haven’t been using Skyscanner (where have you been?), you should definitely give it a try. Skyscanner is a great app for comparing prices among millions of flights and hundreds of airlines.

That’s not all. You can also browse via weekly or monthly chart views to check out prices over time. It is really convenient to check for prices everywhere and anytime with this app. So start planning for your next trip from the convenience of your phone.

Best for navigation

“What’s the quickest way to get to my destination?” is one of the most common questions we ask during our travels. The best app out there is none other than Google Maps. Google has done such a fantastic job with Google Maps that you can skip the physical foldout map you used to grab from the airport.

Not only will you be able to navigate your way around the city, you can also explore the area without being there physically thanks to Google Street View, which offers a 360-degree view of the area. This makes navigating a lot more convenient as you can now look at the buildings around you instead of just following street names.

Did you know that you can also save a location as an offline map before your trip? Simply search for your destination, then tap the “More” button and select “Download”. You’ll never get lost in a strange land again.

Best for food hunts

One of our favourite reasons to travel is to enjoy the different local delicacies and the best way to do so is through Yelp. Yelp is great for finding restaurants near you. You can also filter the search results by neighbourhood, distance, rating, price and what’s open now. There are also millions of reviews written by a community of active and expert locals, so you’ll never have to worry about dining at a bad restaurant ever again.

You can also save time and beat the queue by using Yelp’s SeatMe, an online restaurant reservation service. What’s better than having good food without waiting for it? If you are feeling exhausted after walking around the entire day, you can also choose to use Yelp’s Eat24, a local restaurant delivery service so that you can enjoy your meal in the comfort of your hotel room.

Best for photo-editing

We all love taking photos during our travels, but how do we make it insta-worthy? If you don’t already know, all you need to take envy-inducing photos is by using VSCOcam. Its minimalist UI is user-friendly and professional — you can easily adjust focus, exposure, white balance, ISO and shutter speed etc.

VSCOcam has an excellent selection of editing tools, from simple one-tap presets to manual adjustment controls. Play around with the tools and you will get the hang of it soon and achieve the look you want. It is so much more convenient to be able to shoot and edit your photos all in one app.
