Formerly known as TheatreWorks, recently revamped local theatre troupe T:>Works remains an active champion of female creatives and their works during these troubled times. And in July, their annual Festival of Women N.O.W. (which stands for No Ordinary Work) is set to return, only this time, as a bigger, better and completely digital gathering.
With over 10 different events happening, look forward to the completely free and virtual interdisciplinary festival that comprises an anchor exhibition, plenty of live stream performances, a digital competition as well as workshops.
Get excited to witness Women of N.O.W lead by none other than festival director Noorlinah Mohamed herself. The second in a series of three exhibitions will feature interviews with over 25 women from all walks of life who are committed to raising awareness for overlooked issues in our society.
The Codette Project
Then there’s the gripping verbatim documentary performance Entangled Intimacies: Transnational Divorce Narratives, which is an example of collaborations across various disciplines and mediums. Using years of research to inform the process, it explores the lives of non-citizen migrant married women and their experiences with limited financial resources and more.
It’ll also be interesting to see actress and playwright Jo Tan star in King, a one-woman show about a typical Singaporean office lady who cross dresses as a man for an office party, where she witnesses male privilege.
But besides the return of the 24-hour playwriting competition which was introduced a year ago, find Writing in the Digital, a performance writing and creation workshop focused on digital storytelling. And don’t forget to continuously check out the festival to enjoy more programmes about voices and aurality during its third week. There’ll be contributions from LaSalle College graduates experimenting with sound effects, radio play The Book of Mothers and much more.
Outdoing themselves even amid this dispiriting pandemic, you definitely won’t want to miss the digital return of TWorks’ Festival of Women: N.O.W 2020.
The Festival of Women: N.O.W 2020 returns Jul 15 to Aug 2. More information available here.
