This December, instead of browsing through Netflix to watch yet another Hollywood Christmas rom-com, check out a fresh comedy about modern-day romance in Singapore, presented by a new theatre troupe, The Assembly Point.
Titled Affections, the theatre collective’s debut play is inspired by Charles Mee’s Big Love as well as Limonade Tous les Jours; and takes audiences through the various ups and downs of love and life.
So journey alongside an interesting cast of characters, via a collection of local anecdotes involving the cast and their relationships. Expect quirky and perhaps even relatable stories about the expectations love bears, falling in love and getting married; like a bride experiencing cold feet before her wedding day and a Singaporean man avoiding finding love in Bali.
To ensure authenticity and a Singaporean flavour, a young, local bunch will be starring in the self-directed Affections. Among the talented cast is co-founder and actor Jeramy Lim who has collaborated with Wild Rice and TheatreWorks, as well as co-founder and actress Jelaine Ng who will soon be performing her solo piece The Shadow Curriculum at the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival next January.
Modern romance is but a dream. So we’re definitely eager to see how this new theatre troupe tackles love from a local perspective, touching on subjects like dating in Singapore, BTO problems and more.
Truthfully, it wouldn’t really be a festive season without a holiday rom-com to put a little pep in our step.
