23 fun things to do in Singapore this week (Oct 9-13)

If you missed out on the trippy GIF fest on the weekend, you have until Wednesday to head down to Gillman Barracks to check it out. This week there are a couple of Oktoberfest events dotting the city, as well as the return of Fred Perry's Subculture Live.

ART 
The collectively beloved graphic interchange format (GIF) takes center stage at this year’s <a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/events/news/theres-entire-festival-dedicated-gif… target="_blank">Noise x GIF Fest</a>, which spotlights the artistic medium and its role in digital art, entertainment and creative communication through over 50 original GIFs done by both professional and amateur artists in SIngapore. FESTIVAL 
The island’s annual festival celebrating architecture is back—this year with the theme "Building Agency". Held across multiple venues, <a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/events/news/what-to-check-out-at-this-years-arch… target="_blank">Archifest 2017</a> will see a lineup of more than 50 curated exhibitions, tours, talks and installations, to bring the public closer to appreciating our built environment. EXHIBITION 
The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1916420701944331/" target="_blank">ION Art Photography Series</a> returns for its fourth edition, this time featuring the best of portrait, architectural, lifestyle, documentary, sports and street photography by eight renowned Singapore-based photographers such as Marc Tan, Justin Ong and KC Eng; all shot using Leica cameras and lenses. FILM 
The National Gallery Singapore is messing with minds and shaking things up with <a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/events/news/appreciate-art-film-festival-films-art" target="_blank">Painting with Light</a>, a showcase of more than 30 award-winning feature-length and short films exploring the multi-sensory medium of art. FOOD 
Mexican king of the (Duxton) hill <a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/events/news/have-your-fill-tacos-prepared-six-si… target="_blank">Lucha Loco</a> is stepping up with their first Taco Libre event, featuring tacos made by six of SIngapore's top chefs like Artichoke's Bjorn Shen, Cheek by Jowls' Rishi Naleendra and Dave Pynt of Burnt Ends over 12-weeks (rotates every fortnight). These chefs will be vying for top suds as the "Ultimate Taco Champion". Through Nov 4

THEATER 
In celebration of Sing'theatre's 10th anniversary, they're staging their own adaptation of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1962704770683390" target="_blank">Forever Young</a>, a comical jukebox musical from the original European hit by Swiss writer Erik Gedeon, at the School of the Arts. Here’s one for the carnivores: Everyone’s favorite meat buffet restaurant The Carvery beefs up their menu with the return of the <a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/restaurants-bars/news/get-ready-overdose-meat-fu… target="_blank">Great Meat Feast</a>, featuring a new-and-improved, international line-up of pork cuts and beef carvings. EXHIBITION 
On the 75th anniversary of the fall of Singapore, the National Museum of Singapore remembers 1942, with their first large-scale, blockbuster <a href="http://nationalmuseum.sg/exhibitions/exhibition-list/witness-to-war-reme… target="_blank">war exhibition</a> featuring more than 130 artefacts from 10 overseas museums and institutions. FILM 
Co-presented with the Embassy of Finland, the Finnish Film Foundation and the Finland 100 team, the inaugural <a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/events/news/singapore-getting-its-first-finnish-… target="_blank">Finnish Film Festival</a> will be held at The Projector, screening a variety of films that showcase their social and natural landscapes like Little Wing, a moving tale of a young girl who goes on to find her biological father after being raised by her erratic and immature mother. DRINK/EAT 
This year, Erdinger takes its annual Oktoberfest to the idyllic <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/119558758763045/" target="_blank">Summerhouse</a>, for a full 17 days of food and fun. Wildseed Bar at The Summerhouse celebrates with a makeshift German biergarten (beer garden) and exclusive dinner menu of German treats (lots of meat and sausages); as well as  live music and live stations of Bavarian weisswurst, pretzels, pork belly roasts, house-cured smoked salmon and sausages. FESTIVAL 
National Museum of Singapore is celebrating their <a href="http://nationalmuseum.sg/programmes/programme-list/happy130nms" target="_blank">130th birthday</a> in the biggest way possible. The oldest of its kind, the museum will be opening up its doors to showcase its history through museum tours, its galleries, art installations and various fringe activities led by their curators and docents. There'll also be live performances at the coach bay and platform in front of the escalators on level 2 and an Artisanal Retro Market to check out. Oct 13-15
ART 
Good things come in small packages—is what the folks behind iPreciation would like the growing art community in Singapore to know. Presenting the fourth edition of <a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/events/news/the-fair-celebrating-small-sized-art… target="_blank">Portable Art Week</a>, the local fine art company is once again spotlighting contemporary artworks from Singaporean and Asian artists. The catch? All the art on show is “small-sized” and collectible. Oct 13-21

The third edition of Objectifs’s <a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/events/news/objectifs-all-female-film-photograph… target="_blank">Women in Photography</a> group exhibition spotlights eight international and local women photographers and their works exploring domesticity and family. Follow Belgian photographer Bieke Depoorter around North America where she documents the homes of strangers who let her stay a night in I Am About to Call it a Day; or peruse uncomfortable portraits of Bangladeshi housewives and housemaids in Jannatul Mawa’s Close Distance. Now on their seventh edition, Universal Studios Singapore’s <a href="http://www.halloweenhorrornights.com.sg/" target="_blank">Halloween Horror Nights</a> returns on select nights, all circling the central theme of the seven new incarnations of sins present in modern society—cruelty, deception, malice, manipulation, narcissism, perversion and obsession. EXHIBITION 
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/YeoWorkshop/" target="_blank">Monsoon Song</a> is Singaporean artist Fyeool Darma’s second solo exhibition, two years after he debuted with a series of paintings exploring the Malay identity and dissociation. His latest draws from the aesthetics of urban subcultures, traditional ceremonies and the folk craft of Singapore, Malaysia and the region. Through Oct 29
EXHIBITION 
<a href="http://sg.asia-city.com/events/news/asia-largest-mirror-maze-has-landed-… largest mirror maze</a> has landed in Singapore as a new permanent installation at Science Centre Singapore. The visually-appealing maze features 105 mirror cells, more than 17 interactive exhibits and experiments on light, a bunch of holograms and fake exits. Admission is free but you'll still have to pay admission charges to the center itself.
