One of the best Broadway musicals is coming to Singapore

The Times, UK, has described the show as “Broadway’s greatest dance musical” while the London Evening Standard  has called it “fabulous” and “emotionally power-packed”. But now, instead of listening to what critics have to say, you can decide for yourself when the international award-winning West Side Story comes to the MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands from Sep 13-24.

In a nutshell, West Side Story is about a boy and a girl from two rival gangs falling in love with each other. The Broadway musical is highly inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, but set against the backdrop of a rivalry between two gangs—the Jets and the Sharks—in an Upper West Side neighborhood of New York in the ‘50s. The streets are their stage and the atmosphere is tense as the two gangs burst into song and dance, destroying whatever happiness the young couple have found in each other because of their rivalry. West Side Story won two Tony Awards in 1958 (with a revival adding a third in 2009) and the 1961 film adaptation picked up 10 Oscars, including Best Picture.

The all-American cast, most of whom are Broadway veterans, will flaunt the original, high-energy choreography by the legendary Jerome Robbins, set to the music and score of Leonard Bernstein and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim. This production of the critically acclaimed, passionate love story will feature a live orchestra of 21 musicians lead by Donald Chan, who learned the ropes from Leonard Bernstein himself.

West Side Story will be in season from Sep 13-24, with multiple shows throughout the week, at the Grand Theatre, Mastercard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands. Tickets are now available via Sistic and are priced at $55-185, or $740 for a VIP Box that seats four.
