The Circle Line is about to get a bunch of impromptu poetry readings

Put down that smartphone, take off those buzz-off headphones and pay attention. Your train commute is about to get very interesting. If you ride on the Circle Line, that is. A poetry reading event (part of #BuySingLit Festival) will be taking place right on the train from Bras Basah to Labrador Park station, led by Singapore Literature Prize-winner Joshua Ip.

Taking place Feb 25, the event will kick off at Singapore Art Museum, where 20-30 poets who also participated in the annual SingPoWriMo will congregate before embarking on the poetry-reading MRT journey. Bring your own poems about the MRT if you have them, and maybe you will get a chance to read to some unsuspecting commuters.

Things conclude with the group heading off to Gillman Barracks for BooksActually’s book fair at Gillman Barracks, where grub will be provided by none other than Red Baron, and books will be on sale from Singaporean publishers like Epigram, Ethos and Marshall Cavendish Education.

By the way, if you’re looking to double the fun, head to SAM a bit early and catch the sidewalk poetry reading event with big-deal local poets like Alvin Pang and Cyril Wong. Yes, these are the same sidewalks that display Singapore poetry verses when they get rained on.

The event is free. You can find out more here
