21 things to see, do, eat and drink in Singapore this week (Dec 7-11)

Start the week right with Mindful Mondays at The Working Capitol, then move onto some decadent food tastings and finish the week out with a certain, famous all-night rager by the beach.

Mon, Dec 7

ART
The Gajah Gallery is showcasing the Pollock-esque work of Malaysian abstract painter Sabri Idrus in a solo mini-exhibition at their new location, the Tanjong Pagar Distripark. 

SAM is hosting a roundtable discussion called, “Art and the Big Ideas of a Small Nation – Progress.” Controversial local artist SKL0 and photographer Tay Kay Chin will be there.

THEATER
It’s the final week to catch Wild Rice’s The Emperor’s New Clothes, in which a vain emperor wants to stage the biggest National Dress Parade ever. Catch Benjamin Kheng from The Sam Willows and veteran Lim Kay Siu in this one.

WELLNESS
Entrepreneurs and creatives, learn how to calm down with yoga at The Working Capitol’s Mindful Monday.

Loewen at Dempsey Hill is having a Christmas market. Come down for food, coffee and Jones the Grocer. 

PHOTOGRAPHY
In case you missed the opening over the weekend, check out Patrick Wack’s portraits of men from China at the Berlin-based Mo Industries pop-up gallery. Wack travelled from cities like Chong Qing to remote areas of Tibet to capture the country’s myriad faces.

MUSIC
Get to know Little Fellas from Singapore and Zen Kwun from Taiwan at this Roar Music meet-up. The bands will present songs they collaborated on at this gig.

OUTING
You can still crack your head at the “world’s most challenging” escape room puzzles. Among the challenges is Dead Men Walking, where you’ll have to find out why the bodies of executed prisoners are disappearing. Creepy.

EAT
There’s a food tasting at Korean fried chicken place Chicken Up’s newest outlet at Parkway Parade. Use your Open Rice or Open Snap ID to register.

NIGHTLIFE
Get to know Singapore’s up-and-coming DJs at Cato’s sessions, where newbies can register and get mentored by international ones. Giuseppe G, who has played at launch parties for the brand Ducati, will be there.

EAT
The chef of the Blue Lotus is hosting a private dining experience. There’s gong bao chicken, butter prawns and smoked salmon on the menu.

NETWORKING
Women in tech, head to this Xmas mixer. Start-up SPH Plug & Play will talk about about their accelerator program and the CEO of content creation platform Bolt will be there.

LITERARY
Emerging poet Sally Wen Mao is and Stephanie Dogfoot of the Sekaliwags fame is performing at Canvas’ December edition of Speak. Also look out for transgender poet Alok Vaid-Menon.

SHOPPING
Local menswear label Faculty collaborates with art and design collective PHUNK on a series of T-shirts for their holiday collection. You can get them from Supplies and Co.

EAT
Kith Cafe is having a special Sri Lankan dinner. Dishes include mutton, cold cucumber and coriander claypot soup and black pork curry.

ART
The Art Space at Suntec is having an opening night of its pop-up gallery. There is a focus on photography, prints and vinyl. The work of newer artists like Sookoon Ang, Chye Teck Chua and Ruyi Wong will be there.

Fri, Dec 11

FILM
The Heritage Outdoor Screenings were postponed due to the haze, but the eight-film showcase is finally here, with the winners and finalists of the Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition. Titles include I Am Eurasian, which deals with identity, and Beneath the Spikes, about an Indian man who is pierced a hundred times to thank the gods for his son’s well-being at the Panguni Uthiram festival. 

DRINK
New bar Grapevine Cafe and Bar is opening today in Upper Serangoon. There’s free beer from 6pm-8pm.

COMEDY
The Comedy Club is presenting their final international show of the year, with Andrew Schulz from the US and Ro Campbell from Australia.

EXPLORING
The Singapore Night Safari is transformed into a magical realm with Mystica, with surreal light effects, LED light performances and lots more. 

PARTY
With big name DJs like Kaskade, Paul Oakenfold and Tiesto, it looks like Zoukout is going to be bigger and louder than ever. There’s also local rapper Shigga Shay making an appearance. 

MARKET
Indie bookstore Booktique is having a Christmas fair with with local indie duo, Twigs & Vines, performing at this event. Grab a tome or two for your nerdy bookworm friend. 

FILM
Aspiring filmmakers can try to make a film within two days at the 48-hour Film Project. Leave your fatigue at the door and drink lots of coffee.
