Just when you think people have started moving on from Tiong Bahru, more cool places pop up. Here are three that warrant another visit to this historic and uber-hip neighborhood.
Whisk
This cute little dessert bar and bakery serves cakes, pastries, muffins and other sweet treats. Located on the corner of Seng Poh and Eng Hoon, the almost all-white space has rattan chairs, wooden stools and lots of white tables. It’s pristine and a little girly, but the desserts display with treats like carrot cake, strawberry shortcake, croissants and banana crumble muffins should be enough to entice even the most resistant of customers.
Tiong Bahru Club
Fashioned like a kopitiam-meets-member’s club, this old school gastropub has all the vintage flourishes you would expect (think metal fuse boxes and tongue-in-cheek vintage signs). They serve up a range of cuisines from local favorites like sambal eggplant, to Eurasian dishes like soto ayam, Asian tapas like satay and lumpia, as well as a slew of Western plates of pastas, burgers and fish & chips. They also have wines and beers like Hofbrau on tap, as well as an extensive Chai tea collection from Chaiholics.
Lee Tai Fu
Occupying the space formerly known as Potbellies, this beer garden and family-style restaurant serves up local and Tex-Mex grub like nachos slathered with cheese and ribs with rice. The best part is that they’ve got a pretty well-stocked craft beer selection with brews from Brew Dog, Rogue and Evil Twin.
