The Beast

The buzz: On the edge of Kampong Glam you’ll find this three-story bourbon specialist, opened by Jamie Koh, who’s also behind Mexican shots bar Chupitos at Clarke Quay.

The décor: Raw, woody and rustic, but with just enough polish. Koh, who went to school in Georgia, was inspired by Southern watering holes and barns.

The drinks: Over 30 bourbons to pick from, including the more unusual Willet Pot Still Reserve ($15/glass) from Kentucky. Their fun cocktail list (from $18) has mint juleps, bourbon “mojitos” and sweet tea cocktails.

The food: Southern snacks like wings ($13) dominate. But there’s also a little diner upstairs where you can get heartier dishes, like chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits.

The music: Classic rock and a bit of American punk.

The crowd: Bourbon-hunting Americans and laidback drinkers who like the good stuff but aren’t too precious about it.

Why you’ll be back: They’re barrel-ageing Manhattans and Negronis in-house right now. Be there to try them when they’re ready.
