Shopping mall restaurants don’t have the best rep, especially considering the florescent mall lighting and sterile vibe. Still, we’re always on the lookout for good mall eats. These establishments are terribly convenient and—often linked to office blocks—mean you don’t have to step out of air-conditioned comfort for lunch.
So we went down to The Dining Edition, Marina Square’s new food wing, for a media preview with an open mind and were pretty pleased to find a couple of real interesting options. Some of the stops on our tour include Shallots (#02-101), a small plates joint by the folks behind Onion at Bukit Timah, and Carnivore Appetite, a casual offshoot of the churrascaria Carnivore.
We also had some Kuroo (black onion) ramen at Menzo Butao and some pork trotters at new northern Chinese restaurant Supreme Tastes Jiang Nan Cuisine. Then it was off to Suki-ya (#02-183B/183C) for shabu shabu. We tried their unusual curry hotpot soup with some fish paste “noodles” squeezed into the boiling broth (with a piping bag). We also visited vegetarian eatery Pita Pan (#02-183A) for some falafel and hummus with vegetarian shawarma (made from soy).
Some other openings we’re looking forward to are high end Italian restaurant Nuvo (#02-100) and Lady M Confections (#02-103), a famed NYC establishment known for their mille crepe cake (a confection of layered crepes and cream). The Dining Edition’s shaping up to be a respectable food hub, worth a definite shot if you’re still iffy about mall dining.
