Next year’s Singapore Biennale will feature more than 150 works by 63 artists from 30 countries.The works will be presented across four exhibition venues–Singapore Art Museum & 8Q Sam, Old Kallang Airport, Marina Bay and National Museum of Singapore.
Nine of the 63 artists taking part are from Singapore, the largest number of local artists to date. They include Zai Kuning, Tan Pin Pin, Michael Lee, Charles Lim, Ming Wong, John Low and Genevieve Chua.
The biennale’s title, “Open House”, was to encourage artists to cross the thresholds between public and private space. Explains artistic director Matthew Ngui, “The curatorial team have worked hard to arrive at the heart of the biennale by connecting artistic processes to what we do every day, such as working, commuting, shopping, and eating, as well as, obsessive or recreational activities in private or public.”
“Works will be presented in ways that relate to the private space of the home, transactional spaces in the city and finally to our ports, which provide the springboard for international exchange. In this way, our exhibition venues have a more direct conceptual and formal link to the artworks,” he adds.
One of the Singapore artists, Ming Wong will present Devo Partire. Domani. Co-commissioned by SB2011, the work transforms Pier Paolo Pasolini‟s 1968 film Teorema by setting the film in contemporary Naples with Wong playing each of the male and female roles. Wong’s work along with artists such as Scandinavian duo Elmgreen & Dragset, and American Taryn Simon will be displayed at Old Kallang Airport.
The exhibition will open to the public from March 13 to May 15 next year. This is the third edition of the largest contemporary art exhibition in South East Asia.
