Another restaurant newbie in the ever-evolving Dempsey Hill area is this third outlet of Margarita’s.
On a weekday night, the restaurant was packed and we almost could not get a seat. Fortunately, aid came in the form of friendly wait staff who whisked us to a table. This efficiency was a refreshing change from being left standing and taken for installation art.
We got ourselves a sangria and a margarita, which tasted fiery enough and fitted in nicely with the very Mexican look of the restaurant. Awash in bright, contrasting colors, filled with randomly-placed tropical plants, paintings, zany mirrors, plus a brightly-colored bar where people were milling around, the whole vibe exuded rooftop-ish casual cool.
We spent quite a while waiting for the food however, because of the crowd. The quesadillas, with chicken, cheese and peppers, kicked off our meal nicely, next came the mixed fajitas, which came with a steaming pan of beef, shrimp and vegetables that you scooped into the piping hot, oven-mitt-wrapped tortilla skins. It was fun and deliciously robust—but we could’ve done with a lot more tortillas (there were only three).
We ended our meal with a fudge-drenched brownie—an average affair with berries stuck in it. Generally, the food portions could be bigger, but this is still a place with a feel-good atmosphere and OK food.
