La Petite Cuisine

The folks behind French bistro La Cuisine French Restaurant have opened up a casual eatery just down the road, a good choice for cheap and friendly French food. Everything is pretty basic—tables indoors and out give the little place a transient feel (this is where you’d head to for a reliable quickie rather than a prolonged meal). Still, the chef greeted us with a cheerful “Bonjour!,” our server was patient and happy to explain the menu to us and we found the environment quite pleasant. The menu is limited to what’s on the blackboard for the day, a mixture of simple pastas and meat dishes. We found everything home-style and tasty. The salmon pasta was sweet and tangy, and the pork sausages were rustic and came on a Mediterranean bread with a delicious dressing. We had the option to add dessert, a coffee or a soup, to our lunch—and found both the orange carrot and the tomato and celery soups satisfying. For somewhere to pop in for a quiet coffee, to read the paper and to have lunch between chores, Serene Centre’s La Petit Cuisine is a good alternative. So the meal doesn’t come with all the frills we’ve come to expect from French cuisine, but perhaps for the price you pay, that’s the whole point.
