So you have the tickets for your favourite band or artiste, and after waiting months, that day has finally arrived. From the infectious singalongs of Coldplay to the intimate one-man show of Ed Sheeran, you are excited and nervous to see them perform in person, but you know it’s going to be the Best Day Ever. Nothing is going to rain on your parade…or so you thought. For an unforgettable concert experience, follow these tips.
1. Go early. Whether you have standing or sitting tickets, be at the venue at least an hour ahead of the stated time. There will be queues, bag checks and hordes of fans. If you are early, you’ll have time to check out the merchandise, grab some food and drink, go to the toilet, and soak in the atmosphere. The last thing you want is to be stuck in a queue while the concert has started. For those with standing tickets, you might want to consider going even earlier to chope your spot.
2. Don’t miss the opening acts. They have been chosen to perform on the same stage as the headliner for a good reason. Some, such as Lauv (who opened for Ed Sheeran), have gone on to hit the big time. For Coldplay’s Singapore gigs, opening acts are Jasmine Sokko and Rriley.
3. Bring only the essentials. This means your ID, phone, credit/debit cards, some cash, and of course, concert ticket. I strongly recommend printing out a hard copy of your ticket if you have a digital one, just in case. All bags will be subject to security checks and if your bag is oversized, it may not be allowed in. Do check each organiser’s list of what not to bring during the concert.
4. Wear comfortable shoes. There will be a lot of standing and walking (and jumping), especially if you are heading to the National Stadium at the Singapore Sports Hub. Highly recommended are sneakers, loafers or boots. Ladies, if you are in the standing pen, do not wear open-toe sandals – for the safety of your feet.
5. Stay hydrated. I’ve seen too many people faint before and during a concert. It can get hot, stuffy and just plain uncomfortable. Remember to drink plenty of water and have some food before the concert.
6. Go as a group, or make friends in the queue. Some say a shared concert experience is the best way to experience your favourite artiste or band. I’d say there is a more practical reason – they can help look after your stuff or reserve your spot if you need to leave the queue.
7. Respect your fellow fans. If you are in the mosh pit, don’t push your way to the front. You are not kidding anyone when you want to join your so-called “friend” there. Don’t be too fussy with the people around you unless they are verbally or physically abusive (that’s when security needs to be alerted). We are all here to enjoy the music.
8. Secure your belongings. Place them in a crossbody bag or zipped pocket as it’s easy to lose stuff during the excitement of a concert. For phones, I’d suggest attaching a wrist strap or chain for added security.
9. Put your phone down…sometimes. We can’t help it, we are all going to take photos and videos of the concert. But don’t keep watching it through a tiny screen. It’s happening right there and then, in front of you, so put the phone away and see it with your own eyes.
10. Take public transport. The roads are going to be jam-packed with vehicles so the best way to reach or leave the venue is by public transport. There are three MRT stations within walking distance of the Singapore Sports Hub – Stadium, Kallang and Mounbatten.
11. Have fun. Leave your worries behind and just enjoy the show.
