Sunny

In this darkly comic thriller, Rashida Jones plays Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto in a semi-futuristic Japan. When her husband and son die in a plane crash without explanation, her life is turned upside down. In the aftermath of this tragedy, she receives Sunny (voiced by Joanna Sotomura), an advanced domestic robot created by her husband for an electronics company that she knew nothing about. While initially resistant to Sunny’s presence, they eventually form a bond and begin to uncover the mystery behind her family’s disappearance. Premieres Jul 10

Lady in the Lake

A seven-part limited series created and directed by Alma Harel, Lady in the Lake has the makings of a gripping noir thriller. Based on the novel by Laura Lippman, it stars Natalie Portman as Maddie Schwartz, an investigative journalist in 1960s Baltimore, and Moses Ingram as Cleo Johnson, a mother navigating the political underbelly of the city. Their lives are brought together by the mysterious disappearance of a young girl, revealing dangerous secrets and personal ambitions. Premieres Jul 19 


Disney+:
Land of Tanabata

Starring Kanata Hosoda, this live-action series directed by Yusuke Taki is a captivating adaptation of the popular manga of the same name by Hitoshi Iwaaki. The story revolves around Yoji Minamimaru (Hosoda), an absent-minded university student who discovers he can make a hole in anything. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a potentially world-ending crisis with nothing but his seemingly useless power to help. Premieres Jul 4

My Home Hero The Movie

HBO GO:
Suicide Squad ISEKAI

In the 10-episode original anime series, the head of A.R.G.U.S. sends a group of super-villains – Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface, and King Shark – on a mission through a mystical portal. They end up in an otherworldly realm called Isekai, a land of swords and magic where orcs rampage and dragons rule the skies.


Netflix:
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Detroit detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy, now aged 63 as opposed to 23 when he first took on the role) is back to solve crimes and cause chaos 40 years after his unforgettable first case in Beverly Hills. When his estranged daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige), now a Beverly Hills criminal defence attorney, and Foley team up with his new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to uncover a conspiracy and turn the heat up. Look out for Kevin Bacon, and stars from previous films in the franchise. Premieres Jul 3


Sweet Home: Season 3

Shot concurrently with the second season of the hit Netflix series, Season 3 concludes the dystopian monster saga and horror K-drama. In a struggle between desires, the characters still living in a stadium under a strict system and a leadership planning to usher in an age of neo-humans face greater challenges. Space Cadet

Being yourself, following your dreams, and striving for the stars are all part of the power of Space Cadet. Tiffany “Rex” Simpson (Emma Roberts) has always dreamed of becoming an astronaut, but life doesn’t exactly go as planned. Her best friend Nadine (Poppy Liu) helps her embellish her “doctored” application, landing her a position in NASA’s ultra-competitive astronaut training programme. Sausage Party: Foodtopia

Warning: This is not for kids. Based on the 2016 adult animated feature Sausage Party, this sequel follows Frank, Brenda, Barry, and Sammy as they try to build their own food society. Having stood up to the human race following the events of the film, Frank (a sausage who discovered and exposed the truth about the “Great Beyond”) and his friends create a safe haven known as Foodtopia. When a massive flood destroys their once-promised land, they have no choice but to partner with humans to survive. Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton, the original feature film cast members, along with Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester lend their voices to the animated series.
