Esplanade’s Dans Festival returns with a Carlos Acosta piece, workshops and more

Even if you’ve got two left feet, make it a point(e) to join in the festivities at Esplanade’s annual dance extravaganza, for many famed, international acts will be present to engage you in the performing arts. Now in its 14th edition, Dans Festival 2019 returns with a multitude of dance pieces, masterclasses and workshops that’ll examine both the body and its movements, from Oct 10-20.

First, don’t miss the chance to catch Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta and his dance company, Acosta Danza, live in Singapore. The dance troupe will be putting on two mesmerising duets by renowned choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, with Mermaid even featuring a rare guest appearance by Acosta.

You’ll also want to check out a poetic performance about vulnerability and interdependence at Pas de Deux, by esteemed 70 year-old German artist Raimund Hoghe and his dance partner; before confronting the ideals of beauty in Princess, which stars Eisa Jocson as one of Disney’s oldest and most well-loved royals, Snow White.

Meanwhile, Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter’s piece Grand Finale will explore and challenge the severity of uncertainty and confusion in troubled times. In fact, dance students and professionals are welcome to gain an insight to Shechter’s works through a masterclass conducted by the man himself.

The uninitiated, however, can also join in the fun and attend dance lessons for beginners offered at the festival, such as What’s Your Move, a free mass dance session under the stars, led by dance instructors from various local studios; as well as Footwork, where novices can learn proper dance techniques.

Finally, at the end of each night, express yourself and groove to the beats at Everybody Dans Now 2019, as there’ll be a dance floor among some art installations at the Esplanade Festival Corner. Just let loose, and dance like no one’s watching.

Dans Festival 2019 happens from Oct 10-20 at various venues around Esplanade. More information available here.
