Muscat Street’s back alleys are now home to Singapore’s first outdoor art gallery

It’s quite like Singapore to find and refine diamonds in the rough. And joining Singapore’s vast list of locations that have seen revamps are the back alleys of Muscat Street, located within Kampong Glam.

The first of its kind here, Gelam Gallery features vivid imagery and paintings by art professionals as well as graduates from local art educational institutions such as Lasalle College of the Arts and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Retaining the concept of a typical indoor art gallery, this outdoor one includes things like artwork descriptions and frames, ensuring that this isn’t just a random display of graffiti and murals.

There’ll also be an appropriate mix of contemporary artworks and pieces that reflect the culture and heritage of the location—but that’s not to say that the artworks won’t resemble or embody the essence of street art. One of the commissioned artists is local graffiti pioneer Slacsatu, who will be doing what he does best; while artist Bianca Goetz showcases her geometrical obsessions together with bright hues in her works.

Spearheaded by Colorinc with support from the Singapore Tourism Board, the project has transformed the dingy back alleyways into a charming outdoor art gallery, with delicate art pieces adorning two walls.

Those who prefer an in-depth explanation of the district and gallery will be pleased to know that multiple free, guided tours will be conducted over the weekend of Jul 12-14, and are available for sign-ups. But roaming around free-and-easy will always be a viable option. Either way, you’re guaranteed to get pretty, Insta-worthy shots.

Gelam Gallery has opened and is located at two back alleys along Muscat Street. Admission is free.
