Hit musical thriller Sweeney Todd to premiere in Singapore this November

Marking the 40th anniversary of infamous musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street this year, the Singapore Repertory Theatre will be staging the first-ever presentation of the Stephen Sondheim production on our shores, come Nov 28 at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands.

Having seen many revivals and even a film adaptation which starred Johnny Depp in the titular role, Sweeney Todd is set in the mid-1800s and tells the tale of a falsely accused barber who returns from exile, seeking vengeance upon the evil and lecherous Judge Turpin who framed him and lusted for his wife. Assisting Todd in his revenge is Mrs Lovett, in hopes of turning her failing pie business around by integrating Todd’s victims into the creation of her meat pies. The team of misfits is complete with other crazy characters like young sailor Anthony Hope and barber assistant-turned-pie shop waiter Tobais “Toby” Ragg. Complications arise and complexities develop as the quirky characters turn against one another and grow vicious.

Starring as Mrs Lovett is Filipino singer Lea Salonga, a Tony and Olivier Award winner who has played a wide variety of roles in numerous musicals over the years. She is famously known for being the singing voice behind Disney princesses Jasmine and Mulan. Now, she will make her personal debut in a more senior role as the mistress of unsavoury meat pies in Sweeney Todd.

The creative team also includes Director Bobby Garcia, who has plenty of directorial and production experience under his belt; Scenic Designer David Gallo; and Costume Designer Rajo Laurel, with the full cast list still in the works.

Have your meat pies now—you’ll want to steer clear of them in November.

Catch Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands from Nov 28-Dec 8. Tickets start from $55 with early bird prices valid till Jul 1.
