Andrew Bazzi is quite the personality. He doesn’t shy away from displaying his confidence and love for his art—his self-assurance is reflected both on stage and at interviews. At just 21-years-old and being relatively new to the R&B/Pop scene, Bazzi rightfully has much to be proud of.
Bazzi’s rise to stardom happened seemingly overnight, when “Mine” off his debut studio album Cosmic rocketed up the charts, thanks to the massive attention it received from being featured as a soundtrack to an international Snapchat filter. “Mine” became what you would call a meme; spun into virality by countless social media parody posts which accompanied the popular track.
When asked if the level of virality it achieved is something that surprised him, he remains unfazed. While Bazzi is appreciative of the success, he seems nonchalant. He says he has always believed in his potential, so the fame came as no surprise.
Besides “Mine”, his collaborative track with pop starlet Camila Cabello, entitled “Beautiful”, has also garnered plenty of attention. In his signature style, heartfelt lyrics of love and lust are set against a chilled out backdrop of laid back beats. To an artist like himself, growing up surrounded by music played a heavy role. Some of his musical inspiration include Guns N’ Roses, Coldplay and Prince, as well as melodies by his Lebanese dad.
Here in Singapore, Bazzi will take on the intimate The Star Theatre venue next week and we’re hoping to hear the freshly dropped single “Focus” featuring 21 Savage in his rendition, live. The sultry number boasts a slick fusion of singing and rapping with the English rapper, who Bazzi proclaims to be one of his current favourites. Given the chemistry, it would be great to hear the duo perform a duet at the show, but we’d settle for a solo. Regardless, he promises a hell of a fun show.
Ever since his explosion on social media, the young singer-songwriter, rapper and producer has had the spotlight on him. His confidence never wavers, even when negativity arises—an admirable trait that not everyone can muster. He simply bares his trademark snarl in the face of haters and adversity.
“Just be as real as possible with yourself. Sometimes you already have all the answers. You just need to listen to yourself.” he advises.
