While news from annual landmark arts event Singapore Night Festival remains mysteriously absent, highlights from some of the participating institutions have surfaced. Of them is ground-up, local favorite Centre 42, whose series of text-based performances Late-Night Texting is back for its third edition.
Head down to the little blue house at Waterloo Street on Aug 24-25, to catch over 30 performances staged by up-and-coming local groups. This year, the series is taking a step back from experimental acts—previous editions included spoken word and improv comedy—and going back to the basics: good ol’ theater.
Like last year though, the focus is on bite-sized theater. A series of 10-minute short plays by Dark Matter Theatrics, for example, will be performed by a small cast of four actors in a segment titled “Eat My Shorts”. Another, “Lovebites” by The Second Breakfast Company will explore the universal theme of love (and love in Singapore) through four pairs of excerpts from old and new Singaporean plays. There’s also “Legend of the Islands” by GroundZ-0 that will tell stories of Singapore’s many islands through multilingual street wayang; and the return of “ETA: 9MIN” by playwright collective Main Tulis Group, featuring dramatized readings of original Malay and English-language plays.
What’s a mini festival without food and light retail? Outside the theater, Coffee Bandits and BooksActually will be returning too to offer bites and books respectively. All the nighttime fun will take place in various spaces around the compound from 7pm till 11pm, so have a good nap in the day before you come. Admission is free.
