An exhibition encompassing the works of one of the biggest names in art today will finally land a spot in Singapore. From Jul 13-Sep 14, be sure to check out Japanese artist and cultural icon Takashi Murakami’s eye-catching, anime-inspired artworks, happening at STPI Creative Workshop and Gallery.
Takashi Murakami: From Superflat to Bubblewrap will see a multitude of both new and iconic pieces from Murakami, including the famed This Merciless World, a vibrant, colourful display of easily recognisable smiley flowers and skulls. If you find the faces of the flowers a tad familiar, it’s because similar ones once adorned a coveted collection of Louis Vuitton purses.

Get to explore what Superflat means—through the artistry of the contemporary artist who coined the term; before examining Bubblewrap, another appellation by Murakami, which confronts issues and ideas surrounding Japan’s “Bubble Economy”. Often compared to Warhol, Murakami, having emerged from post-war Japan, uses his pop art-esque approach to combine fine and commercial art, which is exactly what his avid fans can look forward to seeing in this showcase.
The man himself will even be in Singapore for an Artist Talk session, which has since been sold out due to its unsurprisingly overwhelming response. Nonetheless, guided tours and printmaking workshops are still available for sign-ups, alongside the exhibition. And for those who can’t seem to get enough of his art, a Murakami-themed merchandise store will be selling merch that just might satisfy your love for all things Superflat.
Takashi Murakami: From Superflat to Bubblewrap will run from Jul 13-Sep 14 at STPI Creative Workshop and Gallery. Tickets are available here.
