She was known as the woman behind the man who shaped Singapore. The wife of one prime minister, and the mother of another. But what do we know about Kwa Geok Choo?
Award-winning author and playwright Ovidia Yu delves deep into a faithful retelling of Madam Kwa in her new upcoming play about the phenomenal woman, whose actions and influence directed the waves, currents, and tides of the lives of Singaporeans.
The 90-minute eponymous production follows Mdm Kwa from her early life as a young girl, tracing her journey to becoming a top lawyer in Singapore, her secret marriage to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, then becoming a political wife and mother, as well as the family’s main breadwinner.
Performed by local actress Tan Rui Shan, and directed by Toy Factory Productions’ Chief Artistic Director Goh Boon Teck, the monologue pays tribute to the late Mdm Kwa’s life and achievements – all of which she accomplished behind the scenes, quietly and modestly.
Known to be a brilliant student and lawyer whose influence played a huge role in making two of Singapore’s Prime Ministers become the men they would be, shaping our nation more than any other individual who has never held public office.
Kwa Geok Choo runs from 08 – 24 Jul at the Victoria Theatre. Grab your tickets from SISTIC here.
