Esplanade’s new Waterfront Theatre will be a semi-flexible space for the next gen

Construction of a new building has begun at Esplanade. First announced in 2017, and opening in 2021, the 550-seat theatre will be named the Singtel Waterfront Theatre at Esplanade, thanks to everyone’s favourite telco Singtel being the lucky ones to offer $10 million in donations.

While the new facilities will mainly be used to support future generations of artists by offering them even more platforms to showcase their work, other plans for the theatre include being a space for alternative and experimental art performances.

Made to be semi-flexible, the theatre will present a modular configuration that will allow the staging of more diverse performances. Three types of performance spaces can be created, such as a proscenium theatre, theatre-in-the-round as well as a flat floor layout. Its ceiling will also be equipped for riggings, to accommodate productions that require it.

Along with the theatre is an outdoor area featuring dining options, as well as an open foyer space which will see even more performances and events.

To incite some excitement while raising funds, Esplanade has also designed a maze game with a concept similar to Pac-Man, giving all a chance to break ground virtually with them. The online game, appropriately called Ground Up, will be available from Jun 18-Aug 18. And if you’re so inclined, feel free to make a monetary contribution (from $10) at the end of the game.
