There is no shortage of good food, cafes and restaurants in the Kampong Gelam precinct. One of them is Wong Fu Fu, located along North Bridge Road. It’s a small but homely halal-certified restaurant that serves up signature Taiwan-inspired hotplates and a mini buffet with bubble tea drinks bar.

The restaurant’s name is based on the imaginary legend of a Little Girl Who Played With Fire, where Wong Fu Fu would serve hotplates to village friends, inspired by the nightly campfires at her home and her mother’s love for cooking. She never cooked pork or used any alcohol in her dishes so everyone could enjoy them.

It might be an imaginary tale, but luckily the dishes are real and delicious at Wong Fu Fu.

Ordering from the menu is, quite literally, as easy as one, two, three. Step one is to choose your hotplate dish; we recommend the popular Taiwan Fried Chicken ($13.90) which has a nice crunch on the outside. There are seven other options including Grilled Lamp Chop, Grilled Mixed Seafood and Three Cup Chicken.

Steps two and three are to choose your rice, noodle or pasta, and your sauce to accompany the protein. The nondescript Signature Brown Sauce was surprisingly umami-packed and flavourful, and a great accompaniment to the chicken.

Add $1.90 for the Bubble Milk Tea and Drinks Bar. The milk tea is sugar-free (great for the health-conscious) and comes with a variety of toppings. Unfortunately it is non-refillable so create your bubble tea wisely.

More to indulge
In addition to the hotplate menu, Wong Fu Fu recently introduced Taiwan-inspired Beef Noodles (starting from $11.90) that are available in both soup and dry variations.

The traditional Braised Beef Noodle Soup has generous chunks of tender beef complimented by a rich broth. Our only beef (pun intended) with the dish is that the noodles were overcooked, and hence too soft.

Also new on the menu is its first-ever XL size Gua Bao (Chinese hamburgers). Be warned, these are huge. There are four to choose from: Mala Fried Chicken Gua Bao ($10.90); Fried Battered Fish with Lemon Aioli Gua Bao ($12.90); Salted Egg Yolk Chicken with Cereal Gua Bao ($12.90); and Pulled Braised Beef with Peanut Sauce Gua Bao ($11.90). The best part? Enjoy 50 percent off each Gua Bao with every purchase of a main dish (maximum two per table).

As if the dishes are not enough, every order of Hotplate, Beef Noodles and Gua Bao comes with unlimited servings at the Mini Salad and Soup Bar (valid from Tue to Fri, 11.30am to 5pm, excluding eve of and on public holidays).

Do leave space for dessert. The Taiwan-inspired Milk Shaved Ice is a big bowl of fluffy goodness that comes with a variety of toppings – Matcha Red Bean and Lychee Rose Berry Milk are our favourites.
