Say hola to Platypus Cantina for Mexican-inspired delights. Formerly located at East Coast Road, it has now moved to CityLink Mall to offer diners an extensive menu in a vibrant, invigorating atmosphere.
It has been quite a journey for the F&B establishment. Originally known as Platypus Test Kitchen in 2009, it transformed into Platypus Kitchen a year later and Platypus Lobster Shack & Food Bar in 2013. It emerged as Platypus Kitchen in 2016 before its current iteration in the heart of town today.
Platypus Cantina has a full-fledged kitchen that serves up both traditional favourites and innovative Mexican classics with a local twist. Start with the vegetarian Quesadillas with Braised Tempeh topping ($13.90); or choose the Pulled Pork Carnitas ($14.90), Beef Carne Asada ($14.90) or Pollo Asado Chicken ($13.90) for more meaty alternatives.
The Mac ‘N’ Cheese Platter and Tomatillo Rice Bowls come with a variety of toppings including Spiced Beef Rendang, Glazed Asian Pork Belly or Tempeh as a nod to local fare. For a warm and comforting meal, try the Adobo-Style Mutton Stew ($22.90), Beef Caldillo Soup ($22.90) or crowd-favourite Ale-Guajillo Seafood Soup ($29.90). The Cantina also serves a wide range of tacos to cater to the most discerning tastebuds.
Food is best when shared, which is why Platypus Cantina also has a medley of tapas designed for communal eating. The selection features an array of flavours and textures, from the fiery Angry Chicken Wings ($13.90++) to Beer Battered Shrimp Poppers (18.90).
The Char-Grilled Truffle Beef Cubes ($24.90) offer tender beef and truffle-infused goodness, while seafood lovers can indulge in Colorado Calamari Rings ($18.90), Mexican Soft Shell Crabby ($26.90), and Flame-Charred Baby Octopus ($18.90).
Margaritas and Micheladas (a traditional Mexican beer cocktail) are a given at any Mexican restaurant. Try the signature creation, Hell’s Angel Spicy Margarita ($14) – it’s a fiery drink made with Mexican chili, pineapple, mango, spices, and agave syrup. Happy Hours are from 12pm to 8pm daily (excluding eve of and on public holidays). With drinks starting from as little as $8.
