Show Lo might be a controversial figure but judging from the reaction when he was in town recently in Oct, he is still very much in the hearts and minds of his fans.
The Taiwanese singer-actor-host and brand ambassador of Niu Dian Beef Noodles was here to open the restaurant chain’s third outlet and to perform at the Singapore leg of his Evolution World Tour 2023.
SG Magazine had a quick chat about his association with the brand, his favourite noodles and his plans for the future.
When did you first discover that you loved beef noodles?
Since I was a child, I have loved eating beef. Wherever I travel, I look for beef noodles. I ate four bowls of Niu Dian Beef Noodles the first time I tried them. The chewy noodles and the delicious broth are so comforting. There is no way to describe how the beef, noodles, and broth come together. As a brand ambassador, I don’t say this because I love the noodles, but because I’m just a huge fan.
Three Niu Dian Beef Noodles outlets have opened here in a matter of months. What are your thoughts on that?
It all happened quickly, but many people seem to enjoy the dishes. Each location has a different customer base. Students, office workers, and families frequent the new Bugis Junction outlet. Our goal is to make the brand more accessible to everyone.
Do you have a new favourite on the menu?
The menu at Niu Dian is regularly refreshed. The original beef noodles still hold a special place in my heart simply because I don’t dare eat innards like tripe or tongue. I feel like I am watching someone French-kiss a cow every time I see people eating beef tongue.
What else do you like to eat in Singapore?
Before I tried Jian Dao Jian Curry Rice (literally translated to “scissors-cut curry rice”), I always said black pepper crab. I can eat two packets of it!
Is there anything that Show Lo is afraid of?
I’m not afraid of failure, but I worry about my mother’s health. She is my lifeline. I’m glad that she’s here with me. Right now, she is in Orchard Road, having a coffee and shopping. She will be attending my concert.
The year is coming to an end. How have things gone so far, and what are your plans for the coming year?
I can’t believe how quickly time has passed. This year has been very fulfilling for me. Many things have been resolved, and I’ve encountered a lot. I will be performing a solo concert at Taipei Dome for New Year’s. I have a concert coming up in Canada after the one in Singapore. I also have a lot planned for the first half of 2024, including releasing a new single.
New braised pork belly meals
There’s no stopping Taiwan’s Niu Dian Beef Noodles. The three-time consecutive Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee now has three outlets in Singapore, including the latest one at Bugis Junction. The restaurant chain is known for its classic handmade beef noodles served in a flavourful broth that has been simmered for 24 hours and topped with tender beef parts (air-freighted from Australia). Furthermore, its proprietary sauces and marinades are imported from Taiwan to ensure consistency in flavour. Now, Niu Dian restaurants offer a broader variety of dishes. Diners can find new rice and noodle bowls on the menu, including Braised Pork Belly Noodles, Yakiniku Pork Pearl Rice Bowl, and Stir-Fried Pork Noodles. Try the Braised Pork Belly Pearl Rice Bowl ($16.90++) that features thick, succulent slices of braised pork belly paired with a whole egg over fragrant Taiwanese pearl rice dressed in the braising sauce. |
Niu Dian Beef Noodles is located at #02-50, Bugis Junction, 15A Lorong Liput, and #01-01/02 VIIO @ Balestier.
