Introducing Kelo Cafe + Gastrobar, the ketogenic dieter’s go-to spot for original food

, Introducing Kelo Cafe + Gastrobar, the ketogenic dieter’s go-to spot for original food

A ketogenic diet is typically low in carbs and high in fat. Kelo Cafe + Gastrobar offers affordable, healthful keto-friendly and low-carb options (think seafood char kway teow with oat fibre konjac noodles) alongside bar bites and grilled protein skewers.

Charlie Teo, co-founder and head chef of Kelo Food (formerly NuCarbs), started the company to dispel the misconception that low-carb meals should be bland, restrictive and costly. As part of its evolution, Kelo Cafe + Gastrobar aims to make carb-dense foods enjoyable for everyone.

Since ketogenic diets get more calories from fat and protein, Teo has created unique recipes to help people develop a healthier relationship with food. The menu, free of preservatives, sugar, and MSG, is entirely original and sauces are made in-house.

Among the brunch/daytime dishes are Tempeh Pad Thai ($16) using oat fibre konjac noodles; Korean Bulgogi Kimchi Fried Rice ($16.50); Grilled Flank Steak Chimichurri Bowl ($19) with cauliflower fried rice; and Asian Braised Beef Brisket Risotto ($21) with low-carb staples like riceberry (a rice variety from Thailand). These are available Friday to Sunday, 11am to 3pm.

Did we also mention it has a pet-friendly alfresco area?

In the evening, enjoy snacks such as Cajun Paneer Pops ($9); hot tapas (from $9 for mixed garlic shrooms); and cold tapas, including Asian Ahi Tuna Tartare ($18). The entrée section features a selection of grilled protein-based skewers consisting of such ingredients as shiitake mushrooms ($2/stick); plant-based Mycoprotein Ham ($3.50); and pork collar cubes ($4) accompanied by sauces like Yuzu Teriyaki (free) and Green Herb Yoghurt (add $1.50).

The drinks list has items such as Kombucha ($7) and Keto Impossible Ale (from $8) and Lo-Carb Blondie (from $7.50) produced by LeVeL33 urban microbrewery. Speciality drinks, like Creamy Limonado ACV ($7), use monkfruit or allulose sweetener and zero-carb spirits.

Beyond the restaurant, Kelo Food continues to offer ready-to-eat keto-friendly, low-carb meal plans to make healthy eating sustainable.
