Select Group, the food service provider behind the first Hawkers’ Street at Ion Orchard, has just opened a second outlet in Tampines 1 that boasts three times as many seats and double the stalls. Even better, Michelin Bib Gourmand awardees – recognising establishments that sell good food at moderate prices – and beloved hawker brands have come home to roost in this spacious 518-square-metre air-conditioned food court.
Among the notable names on the roster is an outlet of Tai Wah Pork Noodle peddling its signature bowl of minced pork noodles heady with the scent of dried sole, vinegar and housemade chilli sauce. (It is not to be confused with Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle, Singapore’s sole Michelin-starred hawker which is run independently by a relative.)
For another Singaporean staple and our bona fide national dish, head to Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice whose original stall was first established in 1988 at, as its name suggests, Tiong Bahru Market.
Other outlets of well-known stalls include Garden Street Kway Chap, a specialist in braised offal paired with silky smooth noodles hailing from Serangoon Garden Market; Pang’s Hakka Yong Tau Foo, a brand featuring the treasured family recipes of its eponymous chef Pang Kok Keong; and Koung’s Wan Tan Mee, a household name now close to its 60th year in operation.
Younger hawkers who’ve made their mark in the Singapore culinary scene will also be represented. There’s King of Fried Rice, whose signature brand of egg fried rice topped with a generous golden pork chop can now be found at over 30 outlets across Singapore, as well as Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway, headed by 2018 MasterChef Asia finalist Aaron Wong.
And if you don’t live near central or the east? Well, Select Group will be opening a third Hawkers’ Street at Bukit Panjang Plaza come August.
