You may have seen the snaking queue at Warabimochi Kamakura’s One Holland Village outlet, and lamented the hours-long waiting time.
Well, there is now a second outlet at Taste Orchard, one of the newest shopping centres in Orchard Road. This means it will probably be easier and quicker to get your hands on its famous warabimochi, desserts and drinks.
Founded in 2004, Warabimochi Kamakura already has more than 50 stores and counting, in Japan, Hong Kong and Canada. Fans have proudly declared that its warabimochi is the best they’ve eaten.
It might be due to the traditional way the warabimochi is made, with bracken starch and a house secret blend that is said to result in a silkier mouthfeel, and a chewier lighter texture. Each serving is dusted generously with high quality kinako sourced exclusively from Japan.
Unlike conventional kinako, Warabimochi Kamakura’s kinako has been roasted at a higher temperature and for longer time, resulting in a deeper and richer flavour. It is finished off with a housemade kuromitsu syrup, made with 100 percent pure brown sugar from Okinawa without any addition of corn or sugar syrup.
The hand-cut and hand-tossed pieces of warabimochi are made fresh daily, available in boxes of five or 10 pieces.
Those who prefer a quick indulgence can have them in Warabimochi Cups (two pieces), served with or without ice cream.
Then there are the warabimochi dessert-drinks. Each cup comes with a warabimochi base with flavours like Strawberry Yogurt & Strawberry Milk, Asakawa-en Matcha, and Tenku No Hojicha. For a refreshing twist, reach for the newest Lemonade and Matcha Lemonade flavours.
