It’s fascinating that complex flavours can be derived from seemingly the simplest of combinations: cognac, orange essence, wood and time.
But that’s exactly what iconic French Maison Grand Marnier has done with Quintessence, one of two rare Grand Cuvees recently launched under the new Exceptional Range. It showcases the highest expression of the Maison while paying homage to the liqueur’s storied history.
Quintessence elevates the assemblage of cognac and bigaradia orange, highlighting the rarest and oldest family reserves, hors d’age Cognacs, aged up to 70 years exclusive from Grande Champagne. The blend comes from only 11 selected barrels, among which two are from 1947, and three demijohns from Paradis, which are believed to be even older from the personal reserves of the Marnier Lapostolle family cellar.
The addition of the finest Bigaradia orange peels is key. Master Blender Patrick Raguenaud looked to the Maison’s archives for the creation of Quintessence and found an old recipe where the Bigaradia orange was macerated in Cognac.
The orange peels are double-distilled to ensure an intensity of flavours. The painstaking process yields a rich, smooth amber-gold liquid, with dry fruit facets of apricot and walnut, underlined by a warm dark vanilla base.
The taste is intense, complex and multi-layered. On the nose are fresh orange notes, vanilla, almond and a hint of spice and sandalwood. Bitter orange citrus and peaches dominate the palate before mellowing out with caramel and honey.
Complementing the quality of the liquid is a bespoke Baccarat decanter, an ode to the original bottle of Grand Marnier made centuries ago. Made by Baccarat’s masterful artisans, each decanter is unique and mouthblown at 1450 degrees Celsius. It is packaged in a unique presentation box with crystal handles, which opens outwards to reveal the bottle within for an elegant display.
