The mere mention of Ducking Good’s location in Geylang, famously known for being a red-light district, raised eyebrows and sly smiles. The word “duck” or “ya” in Chinese is a euphemism for male prostitutes.
But no jokes about its food, please. The dishes served at this all-duck specialty restaurant are very decent for their prices. It is worth making a trip here, which is a short walk away from Aljunied MRT station.
Brought to you by the same team that opened Boeuf Steakhouse (the Telok Ayer restaurant that specialises in beef), Ducking Good offers no less than 10 ingenious ways of savouring duck, paired with complementary sides to go with the rich red meat.
Diners can see their dishes being prepared in the open kitchen, and even select their duck from a long hanging display rod on which roasts of the day are hung.
The meat is cooked and prepared in various forms – roasted, braised, salted, fried, spiced or more – using both classic and modern duck recipes.
Signature flavours come in three iterations. The Herbal Roast Duck ($20 quarter, $39 half, $69 whole) brines a whole duck in a herbal bath before being roasted. The Signature Braised Duck ($20 quarter, $39 half, $69 whole) slow-cooks the duck in a house-blended soy broth over long hours. The Signature Salted Duck ($20 quarter, $39 half, $69 whole) cooks duck in a compact salt cast to retain the juices and tenderise the protein while lending it a light brine.
Highly recommended are Spicy Kou Shui Duck ($9.90) and Crispy Spiced Duck Leg Confit ($13.90), two dishes originating from opposite continents but done equally well. The former is a cold dish served in a multi-layered Sichuan chilli dressing with minced garlic and ginger, while the latter, typically a French classic, presents a lovely balance of crackling skin and tender meat.
Warm your heart, stomach, and soul with the Salted Vege Duck Soup ($19.90), Si Shen Nourishing Soup ($9.90) and Chinese Yam & Figs ($9.90). There are also herbal tonics for added health enrichment like the Dang Shen Tonic ($13.90), Ba Zhen Tonic ($13.90) and Shi Quan Tonic ($13.90).
Single diners can opt for Signature Set Meals ($9.90) with their duck of choice to be had with a side of Claypot Porridge, Jasmine White Rice, or Fragrance Duck Fat Garlic Rice (additional $1).
Other sides include Spring Onion Tofu Claypot ($9.90), Vermicelli and Cabbage Pot ($9.90), Chilled Cucumber ($3.90) and Thai Sweet Chilli Tofu ($9.90).
Wash it all down with teas specially selected to cut through the protein-heavy meal or draft beers such as Guinness and Heineken. It’s Happy Hour All Day where the beers, as well as house pour red and white wines, are available at $9.90++ per pint/glass all day every day.
To celebrate its grand opening, the restaurant is offering 50 percent off specialty duck dishes on rotation for four consecutives until May 17 (limited to one redemption per table per bill). Find out more here.
