Back in July, the Singapore Food Agency officially approved 16 species of insects for consumption. Among the insects are various species of crickets, grasshoppers, locusts, mealworms and silkworms. It was a long-awaited announcement for adventurous F&B establishments here who have been keen to incorporate this alternative to meat. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, insects are a sustainable food source with a high protein content, and produce lower greenhouse gas emissions when farmed.
And what better time to introduce insects than on Halloween? Chupitos, a restaurant and bar at CQ @ Clarke Quay, has taken “creepy crawly” to a whole new level with bug-infused cocktails and shooters.
The daring Halloween menu (Oct 24 to 31) has cocktails and shots garnished with real insects like grasshoppers and crickets. Get adventurous with drinks like the Hell Hopper and Love Bugs, made with premium spirits and insect toppings.
On Oct 26, the Beetle Jozze Party will add spine-tingling fun to your Saturday night. Set to be “the biggest bug bash in Singapore”, it will be an evening to face your fears with more insect-themed cocktails and shooters, along with live music, a DJ set, and a Patron bicycle blender to craft your own monstrous margaritas.
If you can’t wait, the ongoing Patron Twin Cocktail Promo will tantalise your taste buds from now till Oct 23 and on Nov 1. Choose Pan de Muertos or Paloma Roja cocktails at $18 each, or enjoy two for $30.
This is just the beginning. Watch this space for more insert-fuelled food and drinks in other restaurants and bars in the coming weeks and months.
Chupitos is at 3E River Valley Road #01-01, CQ @ Clarke Quay, The Circuit, Singapore 179024.
