French restaurant Odette at National Gallery Singapore has been named The Best Restaurant in Asia. It is the only restaurant from Singapore to make it onto The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list, at No.14.
Odette’s chef Julien Royer also won the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award. Voted for the world’s leading chefs, this special prize is awarded to a chef who has had a significant positive influence on the culinary community.
The awards ceremony, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, was held in Valencia, Spain on Jun 20 to honour the pinnacle of gastronomic talent from 24 territories across five continents.
Number one on the list is Lima’s Central, which has been crowned The World’s Best Restaurant 2023, as well as The Best Restaurant in South America 2023. Placed at No.2 in the 2022 list, the restaurant is an ode to Peru, with a menu that celebrates the unique biodiversity of the country’s indigenous ingredients.
One notable Asian winner is Le Du, Bangkok. At No.15, it is the highest new entry from the region. New Asian entries for 2023 include Gaggan Anand, Bangkok at No.17, and Sézanne, Tokyo at No.37. A total of seven Asian restaurants are included in the list, from Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Other accolades went to Copenhagen’s Alchemist (No.5) which won the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award; Pía Salazar of Nuema, Quito who was the recipient of The World’s Best Pastry Chef Award; and Cape Town’s Fyn (No.75) which received the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list is voted for by 1,080 international restaurant industry experts and well-travelled gourmets who make up The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy.
