The British comedy pals behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are back. This time they’re Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost), a pair of fanboys from the UK on a pilgrimage to the geek Mecca that is San Diego Comic-Con and to visit America’s best-known sci-fi film and UFO sites. Just as they begin their road trip, they crash into a real-life little green man named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen), who’s on the run from the American government. He asks them to do him a favour, and so the ride of their lives begins.

Talk about a serious case of road rage. And we absolutely love it. This one more than makes up for the three lackluster sequels to The Fast and the Furious. The street racing with which the first in the franchise made its name makes way for supercar acrobatic battles, one car trying to obliterate the other. Without much use of firepower. Petrolheads from the previous four installments have matured, they now just want to stop being on the run all the time, settle down, start a family... basically get on with life.

Directors’ chairs at the front for the old folk, standing party at the back. But seriously, what kind of music festival has a barricaded area for seats? Surely one doesn’t sit down to a Rock & Roots gig. And this is the first time we’ve come across a music festival that segregates one audience from another, what with the barriers put up.

So it was pissing down a couple of hours before the gig, and we thought, “Oh no, it’s going to be a mud fest like Laneway,”—remember that fateful Jan 29 music festival earlier this year? Thankfully, when we rocked up at about 7:30pm, the rain had tricked to a slight drizzle. But what greeted us was a queue that snaked such a long way back from the entrance; it was quite a while before we could see the end. When we were finally inside the venue, the ground wasn’t as bad as we expected. It was muddy, yes, but not nigh-on quicksand-like as it was at Laneway.

Hello world! Look at me! Look at the baby genius I was! Look at the musical virtuoso I am, and look at all the fat, geeky, buck-toothed and bimbotic pre-teens with too much make-up going positively ape-shit over me! And yes, look at that hair, baby. Everybody loves me. In 3D!

The Driver (Dwayne Johnson a.k.a. The Rock) has just been released from prison, years after a botched heist in which he was double-crossed and his brother was murdered. Right from the opening scene, he’s got just one thing on his mind: Vengeance. He’s got a hit list, and he calmly, single-mindedly and cleanly does away with each and every one on it.

The space was pretty intimate for such a pricey venue. Looking starry-eyed at the low-set stage, the young, in their grungy plaid shirts and black skinnies, hogged the mosh-pit in The Coliseum at Resorts World Sentosa, waiting in nervy anticipation for the Arizonian powerpop punks Jimmy Eat World.
