If you haven’t heard of Matilde G, maybe it’s time you should.
The Italian-born, Singapore-based singer-songwriter is already a YouTube and TikTok sensation. She was ranked among the top 10 most viewed artists in “Year On TikTok Singapore” for 2022, and her original songs have been streamed and viewed over 20 million times.
Born Matilde Girasole, the 18-year-old is all about Gen Z female empowerment – she sings about being in charge of her life in “Fighter” and not being afraid to be who she really is in “None Of Your Business”.
While not quite like her older peers – not as moody as Tate McRae or sarcastic as Olivia Rodrigo – the tracks are perfectly palatable dance-pop tunes that show off her confident vocals.
Her latest song “7Oceans”, however, sees a shift in tone. More melodic and mature, it explores the complexities of long-distance love and is an anthem to the joy of experiencing emotions in the present.
Inspired by a passionately intense romance, the soulful ballad is laced with self-reflection and lyrics one would expect from a talent older than her teenage years.
Accompanying the release is a black and white music video shot in Sicily by producer Giuseppe Vergopia. It features Mediterranean actor Andrea D’Arrigo sharing intimate moments with Matilde G against the picturesque backdrop of the Sicilian coast.
In the meantime, she continues to make her mark around the world. Her music has taken her to stages around the world, in countries like Italy, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Maldives, Los Angeles, and of course, Singapore.
At the Musivv Awards 2023 in Dubai, she won Mixer Artist of the Year (for artists residing outside of the Middle East) for her song “Digging For Diamonds”. This year, through a special collaboration, fans can catch her as a special guest performer across Hard Rock Hotels in Southeast Asia.
We caught up with Matilde G and here’s what she had to say about her musical journey so far.
What is the story behind your new song “7Oceans”, and who or what inspired you to write it?
I’m Italian, but I’ve lived in Singapore for many years. Last summer, while on holiday in Italy, I met this captivating Sicilian guy with dark, expressive eyes. Our relationship was short but intense, full of passion and feelings. It didn’t last due to the distance, so I wrote “7Oceans” to remind myself to live fully in the present and not to overthink things.
This release is much more soulful and intimate than your previous releases like “Fighter”, “None Of Your Business”, and “Cup Of Tea”. Is this a new direction for you musically?
Thank you for noticing the shift. Every time I perform “7Oceans”, my heart melts. This song is deeply personal, written from a place of deep emotion, and my current favourite. When it comes to my musical direction, I like to keep it fluid, writing according to my feelings and life experiences. My music is about being authentic and expressing myself honestly, no matter where it takes me.
Growing up, was music something you always wanted to do? When did you discover you could pursue songwriting further?
Music has always been a part of my life. I can’t say I chose it consciously; it chose me. My passion for music was innate, even though I wasn’t born into a family of artists. With dedication and hard work, I’ve nurtured this gift into an integral part of myself.
What is your creative process when you write your songs?
If I’m writing by myself, I often start at the piano, letting the melody guide my words. Collaborations, which I frequently do, typically start with a central theme for the lyrics and a foundational beat, then build from there.
Who are your biggest musical influences, and who are you listening to right now?
Lady Gaga is my favourite artist because she is constantly reinventing herself while staying authentic. I enjoy a wide variety of music, including classical, pop, rock, dance, and rap. Tate McRae, Queen, Maneskin, Dua Lipa, and many others are among the artists I listen to. I also love Italian pianist-composer Ludovico Einaudi, and I can’t wait to see him live in Singapore at the end of January. There is something about his music that transports you to another world.
You lived in Italy and India before moving to Singapore. What brought you here and what has it meant to your music career?
Half my life has been spent in Asia, and Singapore has become my home. I have grown professionally and personally as a result of the city’s vibrant opportunities. I’ve gained fresh perspectives and inspiration from collaborating with local artists here.
What has been your most memorable performance or collaboration?
Last September, performing at the F1 Grand Prix in Singapore was a highlight. Being part of such an important event was a thrilling experience. It was a unique, experience, both in terms of organisation and atmosphere!
Is there anything in the pipeline for 2024?
This is going to be an exciting year for me. I’ll be performing at the Hard Rock Cafe in Singapore. After that, I’m heading to the Maldives to share my music at several resorts there. Additionally, I will be heading to Sweden, Italy, Dubai, and the U.S. for various projects. As I look forward to more opportunities, I’m hopeful and excited. Fingers crossed!
