Is Gillman Barracks the next Dempsey? With new live music venue Blackbird on the scene, it would seem the area is set to be the cooler, younger cousin of the dining destination – Singapore’s next food, arts and music haven, if you will.
Located in a heritage black-and-white property, Birdbird is the result of four friends with a common passion for live music: Surath Godfrey, a prominent musician and guitar shop owner; Brandon Leung, co-founder of Kanshoku Ramen chain; Danny Loong, founder and CEO of Timbre Group; and Raeza Ibrahim, lawyer and chairman of Pangdemonium.
Needless to say, the owners are no stranger to running a business like this. And it seems they have found the sweet spot in this central-western locale of the island where a live music venue was sorely lacking.
Given its location, ample parking, and generous public space set amongst natural greenery, Blackbird promises to be part of the new and refreshed Gillman Barracks, and an iconic space that brings new energy to the live music and entertainment scene.
The music lineup features a variety of genres, from classic tributes to funk, soul and blues by an eclectic mix of popular homegrown musicians. Its opening week already saw local bands like Shirlyn & The UnXpected, The Day Trippers, and Jack & Rai.
Good music must be accompanied by good food, so expect Western-style cuisine and bar bites, with fresh onion rings, chicken wings, pizzas, cod fish and chips, lamb chops, and steaks. The drinks menu features a wide selection of draft beers, curated cocktails, and an extensive wine list.
