Having spoken to local rising star Juan Wei Jie recently (read the full interview), we couldn’t pass up the chance to go see him and other local hopeful Sherilyn Lim compete at the latest installment of One FC. Despite the packed bill (a total of 11 battles were on the cards, featuring stars like lightweight champion Shinya Aoki, french Judo champion Sylvain Potard and middleweight veteran Tatsuya Mizuno) crowds were initially sparse; but by the time the main event rolled around the place was a lot busier.
It was a mixed bag of outcomes by the end; three wins via knockout, one via submission and three decided by the judges’ scorecards after a stalemate. Both the local stars won their battles (over Malaysian counterparts Alex Lim and Ann Osman respectively). And although the final battle between bantamweights Soo Chul Kim and Bibiano Fernandes didn’t live up to the bloody mess of prior battles (Fernandes won via unanimous vote after a lengthy deadlock), there was no denying the combatants’ commitment. Not a night for anyone shy of seeing a little blood (and a lot of sweat) spilled; but entertaining all round.
