Singapore Art Week isn’t just about contemporary and modern art. Though events like Art Stage aren’t short on glamour, we also like indulging our inner nerds at exhibitions like Secrets of the Fallen Pagoda at the Asian Civilisations Museum. The trove of historical and cultural treasures remind us that art, like material culture, aren’t just for enjoyment in the here and now. The art that we look at, buy and display today will be an indispensable resource for future generations looking to figure out our preoccupations and lifestyles.
We also went to the Larasati and Est-Ouest auctions, where plenty more examples of material culture were on show and for sale. Highlights include some spectacularly painted plates by Picasso and statuettes by Dali, art pieces by the greats that we were really privileged to be able to examine up close.
