Singapore Art Week 2014: Hong Sek Chern’s solo exhibition ‘Sleepless in the City’

Artist Hong Sek Chern drew inspiration for her solo exhibition from Spanish painter Francisco Goya, whose etching “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters” dwells on the idea of sleep.

Depicting how city folk struggle to rest, the paintings are thought provoking with the artists’s signature multi-point perspective. Notable works that caught out attention were “Celestial Mansion” and “Sleepless in Bedok”. Some paintings were also inspired by recent events, such as “Jiat and Kopi”, based on the hawker center cleaning debate between the government and the opposition Workers’ Party.

Overall, we were interested in the thought process behind the paintings and found the local flavor present in the works to be a really nice touch.
