12 things to see, do, buy and eat this Labor Day weekend

This long weekend is jam-packed with tons of things to eat, see, do and buy. Whether you’re in the mood for an all-day barbecue, partying it up on the roof or doing some good, here’s a list of events to head to.

Fri, May 1

THEATER
Whip out your picnic blankets, bottles of wine and basket of goodies for Shakespeare in the Park: The Tempest. Don’t forget to pack those picnic baskets.

FILM
Theater geeks can sit in on silver screen screenings of London Royal National Theatre’s best stage productions. Catch recordings of classic plays like King LearA Streetcar Named Desire and Of Mice and Men at National Theatre Live.

FESTIVAL
Field Vibes is an all-day affair with live bands, DJs, a picnic, a gentleman’s barbershop, a car wash, an Aussie barbecue and a weekend market. We’re looking forward to DJ sets by Lower East Side and food by Cafe Melba.

PARTY
Refuge, the cool new lounge and club on Circular Road, throws it back with old school R&B, soul and hip hop at Reminisce. Think tracks by TLC, Erykah Badu and the Beastie Boys.

Sat, May 2

MUSIC
Local instrumental band Sphaeras debut their much-awaited freshman album at this launch concert. They’ll be supported by Silhouette and sub:shaman. 

CONCERT
But if you’re more into reminiscing over forgotten times, the Backstreet Boys are coming to town for a one-night only concert where they’ll be playing songs like “Larger Than Life” and “Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely”.

PARTY
Cinco de Mayo might not be for a few days but Lucha Loco celebrates the Mexican holiday early; with lots of tacos, margaritas, tequila shots and ’80s disco vibes with DJ El Mysterio on the decks. 

WORKSHOP
Learn the basic steps of designing, creating and printing using the block-out method of silkscreen printing. Your project will be to design a tote bag that you can bring home.  

CHARITY
Artistry hosts Song for Nepal, a charity event for earthquake relief in Nepal. Performers include Mike Spins, Randolf Arriola, Lee Wen and Rahul Advani. Visual artist Ausra Jankauskaite will also be live painting and donating sales from her works to the cause. 

Sun, May 3

ART
Local fine art graduate Allison M Low has her debut solo exhibition Oddlings, which features over 20 illustrations revolving around themes of emotional trauma and loneliness. 

PARTY
Potato Head Folk throws a chillout rooftop party, Irie Sundays. Wile the day away with reggae tunes, Caribbean-inspired food and tiki cocktails. Plus, there’s music by Singapura Dub Club’s DJs spinning a mix of dancehall, steppas and bass music. Don’t forget about the rum punch.

MUSIC
Four bands get together to play at Pleasantry x Dunce, a fundraising effort to support the bands’ North American tour. On the roster are Cashew Chemists, Monstercat, Plain Sunset and ANECHOIS. You’ll also get to buy band merchandise, too.
