20 awesome things to do in Singapore this week (Apr 17-21)

The long weekend may have gone too fast, but it won’t be long till the next one (hooray, Labor Day on May 1, Monday). But until that day comes, you’ll have a whole bunch of food events, parties and exhibitions to check out to tide you over. Oh, there’s also the second weekend of the crazily packed Artbox (hopefully it’ll be a lil’ bit better this time round).

Goodwood Park Hotel’s annual durian festival returns, unfrazzled by the suspension and food poisoning cases last year, with all-time favorites like durian puffs and crepes and and new creations like a designer cakes shaped after the fruit itself. Through Jul 31

DRINK
If you thought a certain establishment’s all-day $5 French wines were off the charts, well, the open concept bar at Capitol Piazza, with their wide selection of beers, including 20 rotating international craft labels on draft and 80 different bottled craft beers, and otherwise known as Tap, has extended their generous, ongoing drink promo of pints of beers and wines going for $10 each, all day and all night long. Through May 1

Cloud Nothings

CONCERT
Four years ago, Cloud Nothings rocked the stage and charmed their audiences at Laneway Festival. Their return to Singapore couldn’t be more timely, especially with the release of their latest record last January, Life Without Sound. Apr 18

While everyone else is away enjoying the season of cherry blossoms in Japan, 7-Eleven is hosting a “J-Treats Festival” to feature sweet and savoury Japanese snacks like Pancan’s canned bread, roasted and shredded dried squid, crunch rice crackers and more at Tanjong Pagar Center. Apr 18-19

EXHIBITION
Calling all Harry Potter fans—if you’re in withdrawal after reading Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts, time to ooh and aah over some Harry Potter stamps, prop replicas, toys and other memorabilia from private collectors all around the world at the Singapore Philatelic Museum. Through Jun 25

FOOD
The Coffee Lounge at Goodwood Park Hotel may be known for its Taiwanese porridge menu, but from now till May, satisfy your love for laksa as they create six decadent and delicious renditions using homemade rempah (spice paste), other high quality ingredients and garnished with daun kesum (laksa leaves). Think laksa with crab leg, laksa in claypot form, and the like. Through May 21

FILM
Catch Surrealism at STPI, a documentary directed by Reiner E. Moritz which focuses on five masterpieces by artists of this movement, including Joan Miro’s world of symbolism and color to Salvador Dali’s tangible dreamscapes. Apr 19

DRINK
St Paddy and Singapore Cocktail Festival may be over, and you may be pining for another big-scale boozy event. This month, there’s the spring edition of 1855 The Bottle Shop’s now-famed Wine & Whisky Week happening at Suntec City on Apr 19-30. There’ll be more than 500 wines and whiskies, among them, varieties of Old World and New World pinot noirs, magnums from seven notable Bordeaux estates and award-winning labels from Australia, Spain and more. PARTY
Our favorite underground haunt on Boat Quay, Headquarters, will see Germany-based multi-genre electronic DJ and producer Borrowed Identity take the decks to serve a palatable repertoire of house, techno and disco for one night. Apr 20

ART
This edition of ArtScience Late sees a collaboration with Ethos Books to showcase a night of anti-realist fiction and to uncover the many unknowns of the universe through a series of theater pieces and experiential art. Apr 20

THEATER
Wild Rice has pulled all the stops for the Singapore adaptation of iconic musical, La Cage Aux Folles. Starring Ivan Heng in fabulous drag, the play is set in La Cage, a famous nightclub in Tanjong Pagar, which a conservative politician wants to shut down. Confusion and hilarity ensues when the son of the nightclub’s host decides to marry the politician’s daughter. Apr 20-May 13

THEATER
Revisit the swinging ‘60s with this sexy musical set in a nightclub on Orchard Road. Funny, bittersweet and brimming with nostalgia, Tropicana The Musical recreates Singapore from a bygone era. Through Apr 30

EXHIBITION
The photography series “Hong Kong Shop Cats” by Dutch visual artist and photographer Marcel Heijnen has garnered quite a following since 2016. This year, the exhibition will be held outside of Hong Kong for the first time, right here at Artistry. Apr 13-Jun 4

Artbox Singapore

MARKET
One of Bangkok’s most popular outdoor markets, Artbox, will be making its way to Bayfront Event Space (next to Marina Bay Sands). As its first outpost, they’ve teamed up with Invade to host the market across two weekends, so expect to find all the trendy clothes, drinks, food and craft stalls, along with live music and photo spots, that made it so successful in Bangkok. Apr 21-23

PARTY
Chill out at Ce La Vi as you begin the weekend right with a beautiful sunset, great company and plenty of drinks, set to the tunes of DJ KFC. Apr 21

PARTY
The Barbershop Music and The Panic Room (yes, that hip barber on the outskrits of Geylang) are working together to celebrate this year’s Record Store Day with a mash of food, drinks, and merch, as well as live performances by bands like Riot !n Magenta and Windtree. Apr 21

FOOD
The first-ever Siloso GrillFest is a two-weekend beachside BBQ party that brings together 20 mobile booths operated by F&B establishments from  Amara Sanctuary Resort, Wave House Sentosa, Ola Beach Club, and more. Be sure to check out the 4.5 meter-long BBQ pit, the longest in Singapore, as you chow down on hearty meats and as local music acts play live. Apr 21-23

CONVENTION
Get yourself a permanent piece of body art at this year’s Singapore Ink Show, with about 150 tattoo artists coming from all over the world, such as Nikko Hurtado, who specializes in colored portraits; Horei Shinshu, the Japanese artist who is famous for his vibrant four seasons designs; as well as our very own Kelvin Leow of The Standard Tatoo Company and Red Sun Tattoo Art’s Weifong Daniel who’ll be repping the Singapore contingent. Challenge yourself and take part in this year’s 48 Hour Film Project, where you’ll be given only two days to conceptualize, cast, shoot and edit a short film with a super tight timeline of two days.
