Whether you’re going indie with Christmas shopping, supporting local bands, artists and other great causes, these flea markets (with parties) may be for you. Check them out:
Rilek Jack (Nov 27-29)
Head over to the second floor of Straits Records at 24A Bali Lane for this one. Apart from stalls and live gigs, there are artists exhibiting their work, too. This time, there’s music from Johnny Eyeglass and Hanafie Warren, with Bouitelle Pop selling rainbow-colored drinks that look like Paddle Pop ice-cream. The Botanical Plate will hawk their own homegrown ingredients, Project Coal will sell natural dyes and Forest Child will be selling leather goods.
Social Market at Open Mark Community (Nov 28-29)
This Saturday and Sunday, the parking lot of Open Farm Community will be converted into a bazaar with about 25 vendors. Look out for the food truck by Kerbside Gourmet, while Casse-Croute will be selling cold cuts, Selva Foods will hawk their vegan friendly acai bowls and Momoco will sell unusual jam flavors like jackfruit and lap cheong. Crucycle will also hold some spin cycling sessions, and yoga classes will be available, too. The OFC people will open the bar for cocktails and juices, along with a custom-built charcoal oven at the center of the restaurant. You can order some food and chill at the alfresco space.
Underground Market No.7 X Green is The New Black (Nov 28)
Part of the fifth edition of Green Is The New Black—The Conscious Festival, this flea market at The Working Capitol will have sellers hawking local fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, with healthy food stalls and live entertainment by homegrown talents. The event is also raising money for charity in conjunction with Giving Week. You can also take a break from this flea market with other events like a panel on the feasibility of sustainable fashion by industry insiders and a series of workshops on making simple but positive changes to everyday life.
Alley Cats, Party at Jalan Pisang (Nov 29)
This event is more of a party with local DJs like Fauxe and Harv spinning their tracks, but apart from this, there’s a real cool art market called The Real Temasek at this event. Support local artists by buying their wares there, and meet SKL0, the famous (ish) Sticker Lady. You can also support other artists like Sarah Thursday and Allison M. Low at this one. There is also a silkscreen demo and workshop that you can sign up for $20.
Nuisance Underground (Dec 1)
This month’s edition of Nuisance Underground features heavy metal and rock acts like Embrace Them Ghosts, Paris in the Making and Calvaire. Don’t forget to pick up some indie zines like Jem Magbanua, Harumaruchi and Diva at this one. Head down to the SIngJazz club to rock out.
Kilo’s Sunset Pasar #2 (Dec 5)
The second edition of this pasar has people selling their secondhand goods, so expect vintage items at this one. Local designers will also sell their clothes, so keep an eye out for that, too. If you’re itching to perform, you can sign up for the open mic night or watch people try their hand at performing for the stage. There will be cocktails, too.
