No longer just a hipster hobby, maker culture is going mainstream in Singapore, with plenty of classes tapping into the trend and fairs selling handmade crafts by local artisans. If last Saturday’s Maker Faire has inspired you to give your hands a little workout, then sign up for a crafting session by homegrown independent stores like Stale & Co., Naiise, The General Company, With Every Bloom and Shop Wonderland.
1. Metalsmithing at Stale & Co.
This three-hour session teaches you how to create your own accessories using traditional metalsmith techniques. Don’t worry if you haven’t got an artistic bone in you, as it’s a friendly introductory level session and you’ll learn how to make your very own brass cuff bracelet through methods taking you from form to finish (with a little hammering and filing in between). Book a spot here.
When: Jul 26, 3:00-6:00pm.
Cost: $95 per person, tools and materials provided.
2. Woodworking at The General Company
If you have never paid much attention during those dusty Design & Technology (D&T) classes in secondary school, here’s your chance to make up for lost time. In this 180 min session, you’ll experience the basics of woodworking, from cutting techniques, using tools like drills and hand saws to finishing methods and the application of wood oils. You can impress your friends with your final work of art: a personalized cheese or chopping board. Do note that you’ll have to be dressed in covered shoes for the class. Book a spot here.
When: Jul 19, 11:00am-2:00pm.
Cost: $95 per person, tools and materials provided.
3. Bookbinding at Naiise@Central
No more relying on unsightly, plastic sticky tapes to keep those loose pages in place–in two hours, you’ll learn how to bind your own notebook by assembling a basic binding jig by Murdoodles, a local label known for its quirky, fabric notebooks. Book a spot here.
When: Jul 18, 5:00-7:00pm.
Cost: $60 per person, materials provided.
4. Flower arrangement at With Every Bloom
No cheesy and uninspired run-of-the-mill Gerberas here. At this two-hour workshop, you’ll be creating a medium-sized bouquet based on your own pick of flowers from a floral buffet and the lesson doesn’t stop there: the class teaches you how to care for the flowers (great for those with black thumbs). Book a spot here.
When: Jul 18, 2:00-4:00pm.
Cost: $150 per person, materials provided.
5. Calligraphy at Shop Wonderland
Improve your rusty penmanship with fancy calligraphy classes by local papergoods brand Letter J Supply. Just like the good ol’ times, you’ll learn how to use the traditional dip nib pen, but with modern techniques. Trade emoticons for letterforms and develop your own writing style at this three-hour workshop. Book a spot here.
When: Jul 29, 7:00-10:00pm.
Cost: $150 per person, materials provided.
