5 must-watch shows at this year’s Singapore Night Festival

Possibly one of the more popular and noob-friendly arts festivals here (who doesn’t like pretty lights?), this year’s event aims for a glamorous spin with its Glitz and Glamour theme. It’s a more flamboyant departure from last year’s Bold and Beautiful, which featured experimental collaborations with international artists. Besides the usual straight-to-Instagram visual spectacles, here’s our list of live shows you won’t want to miss.

1. Alchemy by Starlight Alchemy

Adreneline junkies might want to swing by this fire and light show. It’s a 25-minute performance chronicaling the journey of reconciliation of Apollo, the Greek God of music, truth and prophecy, and Nuri, meaning “fire” in hebrew. The multi-disciplinary combination of flow arts using custom-made aerial, fire and LED props will get your heart pumping.

When: Aug 21-22, 8pm, 9.30pm and 11pm

Where: Singapore Art Museum, front lawn

How much: Free

2. Gardens of Angels by Theater Tol

This parade of dancers and musicians draws its inspiration from the paintings of Russian-French expressionist artist Marc Chagall. Even if you’re not much of a modernist art person, you’d have to admit that a showcase of dancing flowers and animals is pretty easy on the eye. And get this: the performance also promises an aerial carousel of “flying angels” bearing gifts.

When: Aug 28- 29

Where: Armenian Street (8pm), National Museum of Singapore (9pm, 11pm)

How much: Free

3. Kumar’s CabaretQueen of Glamour by Kumar

He needs no introduction. Any stand-up performance by local veteran comedian and drag queen Kumar is guaranteed to end on a raucous note. For fans of his acerbic wit and razor-sharp monologues, what are you waiting for?

When: Aug 21-22, 28-29, 10pm

Where: The House of Glamour, opposite The Cathay

How much: $15

4. Moonage Daydream by Tiramisu

Night owls and party animals take note. Local indie rock band Tiramisu is putting on an operatic concert with burlesque and glam-rock influences, but it’s not all razzle and dazzle. They will be singing about soul-searching topics like human adversity and triumphs, complete with a head-scratching chicken dance routine.

When: Aug 21-22, 1am

Where: The House of Glamour, opposite The Cathay

How much: $15

5. Riot! by Becca D’Bus

Probably Singapore’s answer to the legendary Australian performance artist Leigh Bowery, any showcase by the queen of fabulousity, Becca D’Bus, is not for the faint hearted (or the super square). Expect tons of lewd humor, crude references and belly-aching laughs from this stand-up showcase.

When: Aug 28-29, 1am

Where: The House of Glamour, opposite The Cathay

How much: $15
