Movies under the stars and 5 other highlights at Pesta Ubin 2016

Pesta Ubin begins this weekend, bringing a month of fun and educational activities to the popular island. Here are the six events you shouldn’t miss.

What better way to kick off festivities than with a night of music and film screenings at Pulau Ubin’s charming wayang stage? Among the highlights of the evening are the world premiere of Royston Tan’s new film about Ubin, Homecoming, a screening of Kirsten Tan’s moody, mysterious short film Dahdi, about an elderly resident of the island and a live performance from Inch Chua. Admission is free.

Organized by Treasure SG, Treasure Ubin is a free treasure hunt that takes place every day of Pesta Ubin. To join in the fun, look out for clues on the Treasure SG and Pesta Ubin Facebook pages (and Treasure SG’s Instagram page) that will help you find hidden treasure tags. Once you find them, upload a selfie on social media with the hashtags #TreasureSG #TreasureUbin and #PestaUbin and you could win attractive prizes.  

Open House at Pulau Ubin Fish Farms (May 14-Jun 12)

Pulau Ubin is home to about 60 fish farms and you’ll be able to visit some of them every day of Pesta Ubin. The visit costs $15 and you can register with organizers Sea Angel on their Facebook page.

“Islands of Memories – Pulau Ubin” by Juria Toramae (May 14-Jun 12)

Visual artist Juria Toramae presents this exhibition of 51 photos, some found and other personal, showing how Pulau Ubin has changed (or remained the same) through the years. The exhibition will be hosted by the shop belonging to local legend Uncle Lim.

Join experienced guides for this three-hour walk around Pulau Ubin’s coastal and countryside habitats and look forward to meeting residents like the red junglefowl, oriental pied hornbill and straw-headed bulbul. The walk is free, but you do have to pay for you own bumboat rides to and from Ubin ($3 per person each way).
