While some are getting prepped for Halloween and some are dry-cleaning their lederhosen for Oktoberfest, all you performing arts enthusiasts, we have a line-up of theater productions to check out this month.
Rent (Oct 7-Oct 23)
Singapore production of Tony-award-winning musical Rent by Pangedmonium made headlines this week. Inspired by Puccini’s La Boheme, the story of Rent moves the action to New York City’s Lower East Side, during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic where a bunch of struggling artists have a few stories that might capture your heart. There will be two different versions of the show, one with a same-sex kiss (R18) and the other with the kiss removed (Advisory 16).
The Malay Man and His Chinese Father (Through Oct 2)
Catch the new iteration of this play, which was first staged as part of The Necessary Stage’s M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2015. It tells the story of a Malay Man taking care of his dying Chinese father, hoping that the identity of his mother will be revealed before his father’s final breath.
Little Red Riding Hood (Oct 7-Oct 9)
Take a trip down memory lane with this classic fairy tale at the Esplandade. Brought you by La Baracca – Testoni Regazzi, walk through the woods with them, playing a game of “what if” while eager to take on the role of the Wolf, and make new discoveries at every turn.
The Legend of Beauty (Oct 8)
The Legend of Beauty by Suzhou Ballet Theatre tells a historical story that deeply rooted in ancient Suzhou for 2,500 years. They use ballet to tell the tale, along with powerful music and costumes to give a glimpse of ancient China.
Deathtrap (Oct 12-30 Oct)
The Tony-award-winning Broadway hit has finally arrived in Singapore by Asylum Theatre. A mixture of comedy and thriller, the play is about a Broadway thriller writer (ironic), who has a writer’s block, gets a stroke of luck when he gets a script by a student that is a potential Broadway lockbuster. However, things go awry, as the plot gets a few twist and turn by his neighbour and lawyer. Catch it at the Drama Centre Black Box.
Starring Hitler as Jekyll and Hyde (Oct 13-Oct 15)
First staged in 2014, receiving great recognition, this dark play crosses history and fiction. Played by Daniel York (The Importance of Being Earnest, Wild Rice) and Edith Podesta (Dark Room, Esplanade), it retells the story of the Jewish Holocaust by taking inspiration from the famous classic. Chong Tze Chien’s production at the Victoria Theatre bristles with hard truths.
Wicked (Through Oct 30)
One of Broadway and West End’s most celebrated musicals has returned to our shores. The colorful fantasy world of Wicked tells the story of Wizard of Oz witches, Elphaba and Galinda, and their opposing outlooks. Get your tickets to enjoy this incredible production before the season ends at Mastercard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands.
